He is agraduate of the FBI National Academy and a bachelor’s degree holderin Public Safety and an Associate of Arts and Science Degree inPolice Science. He has worked as a county sheriff since 2009. In anencounter with him, these were some of his responses
Ifirst began my career as a public service volunteer and worked indifferent corporations which included Midland Park AmbulanceCorporation for almost ten years. I then started to slowly climb theprofessional ranks until I rose to become county sheriff. However, being sheriff is not about realizing my professional ambitions. It isa calling for public service. That is why I decided to pursue it toserve the people of Collier County.
Thekey to enjoying a good work experience is doing something you arepassionate about. I love serving these great people of Collier, andthey love and respect me too. I also have a great group of staffmembers who I enjoy the work environment with.
Ihave worked in different departments and done several projects. Oneparticular project that I would love to mention is the CrimePrevention Program named “Love Our Kids-Lock your Guns” which ismeant to get guns off the streets of Collier County. This program hashelped the youth reduce the crime rate and realize that there is somuch to live for outside there. I remember one day I was doingroutine patrol when I met two teenage boys almost fifteen years ofage. One boy was holding a homemade pistol trying to shoot the other,so I quickly intervened and snatched the pistol from the kid’shand. I gave him two choices to either take him to juvenile detentionor for him to decide that he is going to change his life completely.I then tossed a coin to determine the outcome of these two choices. The coin surprisingly landed on changing his life completely, so hedecided to reform saying that it was a sign from God. That is when Idecided to start the “Love Our Kids-Lock your Guns” program.
Everyresponsible member of society should address the issue of drug abuse. It is a major problem, especially in this county. One sad case wasthe death of innocent young teenagers who took a large amount ofcocaine in a campus party which ended up killing them.
Ibelieve the biggest problem with drug abuse is the lack ofresponsibility. We do not want to be each other’s keeper. A lot ofteenagers get themselves into illegal drug trade saying there is nomoney in the current economy and therefore decide to go for easy cashyet they do not want to put themselves around the world and seekthese opportunities. We need to create more awareness on the effectsof substance abuse and help the youth to realize that it is not along-term solution for tough economic times.
Theillegal drug business is mostly common in the streets. My idea on howto avoid this substance abuse is to cut off the demand. This can beachieved through getting the youth off the streets who consist amajority of substance abusers. It should, however, be a joint effortbetween the parents, the police and members of society.
Asstated by the county sheriff of Collier, community awareness on drugabuse should be advocated for to reduce the extent of substanceabuse. Every member of society must, therefore, participate ineradicating this problem.
