Whilecollecting information from the two groups i.e. the control group andthe group who undergone Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, it isimportant to consider the effect sample to achieve an accurateresult. It is a way of quantifying the difference between the twogroups without performing tests of statistical significance. In thisresearch, the mean of the experimental group and that of the controlgroup will be determined and compared with the standard deviation(Thiese, 2014). By determining the statistical power, the researcheravoids wasting of resources by having a larger sample than therequired or using a sample that is insufficient in answering theresearch question. A power of 80% percent will be utilized for thisstudy.
Oncethe result has been obtained, the analysis will be done by the use ofbox plots and histograms. Box plots will be substantial for thisresearch because it will provide a quick determination of whether thedata is skewed and the detection of outliers. Throughout theexperiment, there might be instances when the observation is to theextreme. Box plot can quickly detect these extreme observations fromthe sample used (Neacsiu et al., 2011). The shape of thedistribution, variability, and the central value can as well beeasily observed from the plots.
Thehistogram will also be used to analyze the outcome of the experiment.A graphical presentation of the experimental result will enable thecomparison of the result without providing much explanation. Based onthe shape, a conclusion can be made as to whether the DialecticalBehavioral Therapy is effective or not.
Acombination of the two charts is necessary for the study of variancesamong the sample. Specifically, a histogram through the height of thebars can be useful for the detection of wide variations.
Atwo-tailed t-test will be used to carry out preliminary analysis. Thedifference between the mean of the control group and ones who wentthrough Dialectical Behavioral Therapy will be determined through theutilization of this analytical tool. A two-tailed t-test allows theresearcher to statistically conclude whether or not the interventionhas an impact on the behavior of inmates. Before the analysis, bothnull and alternative hypothesis are composed which forms the basis ofcomparison of the test result are obtained (Heale & Twycross,2015). Null hypothesis: There is no significant difference in conflict resolution for inmates who undergo Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and those who do not
Alternate hypothesis: There is a significant difference in resolving conflicts for prisoners who undergo Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and those who do not.
Thenull hypothesis is rejected if there is a significant difference.
