Theselection of a suitable transducer is a vital factor for ensuringoptimum performance in any ultrasonic imaging application. Whileselecting an appropriate one, it is always advisable to check theinput characteristics which depend on the operating range and theloading effect (Häggströmet al., 2015).A sonographer should opt for a transducer that has a proper transfercharacteristic. That is, its calibration is right, accurate andprecise and has minimal error and hysteresis. Moreover, it shouldalso have a correct response to the environmental influences.

Thethird aspect while checking for a particular transducer to use,always go for one that has perfect output characteristics. Asonographer should check the type of output required (Häggströmet al., 2015).Moreover, they should consider the lifespan of the machine, itsavailability, reliability, and stability. It is also appropriate toconsider the purpose. For instance, the indication, recording orcontrol resolves.

Cleaningis defined as the elimination of all visible contaminants from themachine. A transducer has to be cleaned after every use and bedisinfected and sterilized to avoid infecting a new patient.Häggströmet al. (2015) state that afterevery exam, the person responsible for cleaning should wipe off theacoustic coupling gel and that the machine should not be left soakedin that substance. Any transducer cover or protective device shouldbe removed. In addition, a moistened soft cloth should be used towipe out any remaining contaminants. Häggströmet al. (2015) state that ifrinsing a transducer is necessary caution should be taken not toexpose the connectors of the system to liquids or moisture. Finally,the sonographer should use a lint-free clean and soft dry piece ofcloth to dry the machine and its cables.
