“August2026: There Will Come Soft Rains” is a science fiction short storywritten by Ray Bradbury. The story talks of a “smarthouse,” whichis the main character of the story that was programmed to carry outeveryday activities for the family living in it. The house wasinstalled with futuristic technologies that were automated to performhouse tasks such as making breakfast, cooking dinner, making beds andthrowing out the trash. Additionally, the mechanical voice boxeswould announce the weather of the day, date and the events of the dayand clean the house. “Theweather box on the front door sang quietly: &quotRain, rain, goaway rubbers, raincoats for today…&quot (Bradbury116-121).Inthe modern society, smarthouse automate and controls varioushousehold items and conditions such as ventilation, heating, securityand lighting among others. These activities are controlled throughsensors and switches through the internet. Smarthouses make use ofmodern buildings techniques and automation technology to providehomeowners with a different level of control. The emergence ofsmarthouses have resulted in major debates where some argue that itis an advantage to homeowners while others argue that it can generateadverse effects on individuals.

Historyof Smart house

Thefirst smarthouse was developed from ideas and not from actualstructures which were considered to be fiction. Ray Bradbury hadimaginations of the interactive houses in the future where they couldrun themselves. The existence of the ideas of a home automation hascontributed to actual inventions in the past years, and it isbelieved more advanced smarthouses will be developed in the nearfuture (Bradbury116-121). Smarthouses began during historical period withthe development of labor-saving machines. In the 1900s, an electricpower distribution facilitated the development of home appliancessuch as water heaters, washing machines, clothes dryers andrefrigerators among others. In the late 1900s, the first homeautomation network technology was developed and its primary functionwas to transmit electric power within the home. Smarthouse began togain popularity in the early 2000s where it became a viabletechnology and affordable alternative for consumers. Technologiessuch as home networking and domestic equipment began to emerge in themarket. In the contemporary society, smarthouse machinery focusesmore on providing security and living greener. They are used to alerthomeowners of any intruders within the premises. Smarthouses are alsopromotes sustainability by ensuring unnecessary energy is notexpended from homes. Examples of the current home automation systemsinclude automated lights and thermostat adjustments, remote videosurveillance, and scheduling appliances (Thiyagarajan&amp Raveendra 12).

Argumentsfor Smarthouse Technology

Itis argued that smarthouse technology has already been replicated inour current society. Studies indicate that by 2012, 1.5 million homeautomation systems had been installed in houses in America(Thiyagarajan&ampRaveendra 12).Additionally, the increased demand for home automation appliances hasresulted in more industries manufacturing more of these products tomeet the growing demands. Also, more technological advancement isbeing developed to meet the increased market competition. Therefore,it is evident that technological innovations are taking the directionof developing smarthouse technologies (Thiyagarajan&ampRaveendra 12).

Ibelieve smarthouse would be a good idea as it would provide moreconvenience to homeowners such as saving us time. Conveniencehas been identified as the most reason why individuals would want asmarthouse. Inthe modern society, most people have become busy with work andbuilding their careers that they have less time to carry out housechores. Asmart house technology will be able to carry out the everyday’swork such as making coffee for the homeowner so that they can have itready when they wake up in the morning.In addition, smart house provides homeowners with remote access tomultimedia and music systems in the home, allows users to communicatewith visitors at the door and allowing people to watch videos in anyroom at home (Sahaet al. 163-174). Bradburystated that “Inthe living room, the voice-clock sang, Tick-tock, seven o`clock, timeto get up, time to get up, seven o`clock!” (Bradbury116).“In the kitchen, the breakfast stove gave a hissing sigh andejected from its warm interior eight pieces of perfectly brownedtoast, eight eggs sunny side up, sixteen slices of bacon, twocoffees, and two cool glasses of milk” (Bradbury116-121)herefore, smarthouse would provide individuals with convenience andsave a lot of time for them.

Smarthousetechnology increases the security of a home and property throughmonitoring.It watches the house when the user has left for work or at night whenpeople are asleep through remotely motion sensing cameras thusenhancing the security of the home. Thesmart home technology increases connectivity and interactivity withthe family living in the house. For instance, even when the user isfar away, they can still be able to connect with their household.Through this, individuals can effectively manage their homes evenfrom far. Therefore, it would provide people with more convenienceand safety of home properties (Piyare5-11).

Additionally,the smarthouse is a good idea because it enhances energy efficiencythat helps the homeowner to save money from paying the electricitybill. It switches off lights automatically when no one is at home orin a room. The smarthouse technology such as the Nest LearningThermostat is able to adjust temperature of the home to a temperaturethat is energy-efficient. The thermostat is able to read the behaviorof the home owner such that when, they are not home, they cause theindoor temperature to drop and return to comfortable levels when thehomeowner returns in the evening. This saves the user a lot of moneyfrom the monthly electricity bills by maintaining the temperature atappropriate level (Sahaet al. 163-174).

Smarthouseis a good idea because it would enhance accessibility for thedisabled and the elderly people in their homes. For instance, a housecan be installed with accessibility features such as voice commandsystem where the disabled or elderly can use to perform varioustasks. For example, they can command the system to operate atelephone or computer, lock or open doors and control lights ortemperatures within the home. “The front door recognized the dogvoice and opened,” (Bradbury116-121).Additionally,they can be used to perform other labor-intensive tasks such aswatering the lawn regularly with a scheduled time (Morriset al. 1-9).

AugmentsAgainst Smarthouse Technology

Despitethe various benefits that smarthouse can provide to the society, somepeople argue against the idea of smarthouse technology. Smart housesare perceived to be complex and time-consuming in terms ofprogramming these technologies. Programming a device to perform acertain task can take a long time and resources. Theystate that the complexities surrounding smarthouse outweighs itsconvenience (Balta-Ozkan et al. 363-374).

Similarly,the idea of smart houses have been refuted whereby it is believedthat the use traditional ways in carrying out house chores andperforming other tasks makes human beings more responsible. Forexample, they contend that controlling lights with a switch is easierthan using a smartphone to perform the task. Also, they claim thatperforming tasks in a traditional way engages individuals in thedaily activities at home making their bodies active. Furthermore, itis argued that technology such as smarthouse erodes the character ofhumans. They claim that technology separates people from nature thataffect our natural self whereby it makes us become artificial due tofailure to engage in meaningful work (Balta-Ozkanet al. 363-374).

Additionally,it is claimed that it is expensive to maintain technology especiallyin its early stages of development. Therefore, this makes itunaffordable for most people thus hindering the advancement of thetechnology. Similarly, it is stated that occasionally, technologyexperiences problems such as technological breakdown thus affectingeffectiveness of smart houses in performing household tasks.Moreover,it is disputed that smarthouse technology can be a security hazard tohomes. For example, an automatic garage door opener can allow anintruder to access the home without the knowledge of the owner.Therefore, it is claimed that such devices are not very safe(Balta-Ozkan et al. 363-374).

Itis also stated that smarthousecanonly be effective if more advanced home automation devices areproduced. For instance, that smart home technology like Revolv andlanguages for communication including Zigbee cannot be applied in allsmarthouse devices. Moreover, they contend that most of the Smarthome gadgets do not communicate with each other or through the samenetworks. Smart house technology is produced by different companiestherefore, individuals are required to have an app for every devicethey want to install in the house (Piyare5-11).

Consequently,it has been argued that smarthouse technology could result inself-destruct of the technology. This is because technology cannotcontrol itself anymore and also cannot be regulated by humans ornature. They claim that the rate of development and replication ofthese technologies could result in self-destruction. For instance, afully automated house can soon take over control of everythingthereby getting out of control (Saha et al.163-174). This is evidentfrom Bradbury story which states “At ten o`clock the house began todie. The wind blew. A falling tree bough crashed through the kitchenwindow. Cleaning solvent, bottled, shattered over the stove. The roomwas ablaze in an instant!” The smarthouse lost control and couldnot save itself from fire thus burned down to ashes (Bradbury116-121).

Conclusion

Theidea of smarthouse has been under debate with some arguing that theidea of a smarthouse is good while others claim it is a bad idea.Those supporting smarthouse idea states that it offers convenience tohomeowners, promotes accessibility to elderly and people withdisabilities, enhances security and its energy efficiency. Thoseagainst smarthouse idea claim that it is expensive to maintain, itcan result in self-destruction, makes people lazy and programmingconsumes a lot of time.
