FeministCounselling and Therapy
TherapeuticProcess for feminist counseling and therapy.
Accordingto Ivey, D’Andrea and Ivey (2012), feminist counseling and therapyis a concept that mainly focuses on helping women to achievedevelopment and growth by breaking the stereotypes of traditions andsociety. This is attained through empowering them. Six tenets offeminist counseling and therapy are involved. These includeegalitarian relationships, power, non-victimization, acceptance offeelings, education and development of women power (Ivey, D’Andrea, and Ivey, 2012). According to Theories of Counseling andPsychotherapy: A Multicultural Perspective, the process involvesconsciousness-raising which is characterized by discussing andsharing the women’s personal experiences. Then an analysis ofsocial and gender roles is undertaken. It involves evaluating theclient`s physical distress and how they cope. This assists theclients to understand the possible origins of their distresses.Consequently, the therapist and client will explore ways to gainself-knowledge. What follows is re-socialization, which entailsteaching the women to view things from a different perspective. Itsmain goal is to increase their well-being. Finally, social activisminvolves the participation of the client and the therapist. This canbe through protests, campaigns and speaking out. Social change iscrucial in the society

Thistheory places its emphasis on freedom, responsibility and reflection. In feminist therapy, it can be useful in helping the clientsexperience their social problems like gender discrimination insessions. Consequently this approach helps them to free themselvesfrom self-imposed limitations.
DiversePopulations and Multiculturalism in Feminist Therapy.
Therapistsshould understand that as there are many diverse populations withdifferences there are also some similarities. The Women may differ interms of their cultures, religions, customs and roles but they facethe same social problems even in their diversity. Most of these womenexperience gender-based violence, prejudice, unemployment, pooreducation, etc. therapists must embrace, connect and reconcile thesedifferences and eliminate these barriers. These therapists shouldembrace the notion of multiculturalism which according to Root andBrown, (2014) involves accepting and promoting multiple culturaltraditions in the feminist counselling and therapy process. Itentails the view of all culture as equal in the society.
