Findingand Analyzing a Formal Research Report

Bausch,Andreas. &quotInternationalization Of German Companies Into TheChinese Market-An Event Study On The Consequences On FinancialPerformance From A Rbv Perspective.&quot (2007).

Theexternal report is on effects of the existence of Germanmultinational companies in the Chinese market. Evaluating itscomponents the report uses a passive voice throughout and hencefollowed the standard writing style for formal reports. However, theauthors uses the first person pronouns. Specifically, the use of “we”throughout the report makes it breach the formal writingrequirements. Moreover, there are inconsistencies in the use oftenses whereby in some instances, the authors use the present tenseand in other instances, they use past tense. At no point in thereport, have the authors put two heads consecutively without anintervening text. Specifically, each topic is followed by a text thatwould provide the transition to the next topic. Indeed, the authorshave used tabulations whereby they have numbered the major topicsfrom the introduction to the conclusion part of the report. However, there is no evidence of enumerations.

Thisbusiness report does not provide careful and succinct definition ofthe key terms. Specifically, although the key terms have been statedin the abstract, they are not clearly defined in the body of thereport. Additionally, the report has a high level of credibility asthe assumptions made are clearly stipulated in the hypothesis. However, the opinions are not clearly labelled and it is hard todifferentiate them in the report. A variety of documentations hasbeen used in the study as the authors have referred to many articles.

Thereare varieties of formal sections that have been included in thereport. Specifically, an abstract that provides the summary of thewhole report has been followed by an introduction, which states theaim of the project and introduces its scope. The theoreticalbackground and hypothesis have been clearly extrapolated with varioustheories being discussed. The authors have then stated the variablesthat are subject of the study. The next formal section that has beenincluded in the report is that of the research design whereby themeasures, methodology, and samples have clearly been discussed. Afterthe collection of the data, the report reports on the results anddiscusses them. The final part of the report is the conclusion, whichrestates the thesis statement and provides a conclusion based on thediscussion. Additionally, the authors have a list of references thatwere used as well various appendices, which contain supportinginformation. These parts are very valuable as they are mandatory forevery formal report.

Despitethe fact that the authors have included most of the importantsections of a formal report, there are a few, which have been leftout. Specifically, the first ones relate to the methodology section. There is no clarity as to the research design and approach that wasdeployed. Specifically, this being a quantitative study, there wassupposed to be a specific design and approach that was deployed.Additionally, a research philosophy is missing. The other importantpart missing are the recommendations based on what the authors haveestablished. These recommendations would provide the external clientswith information on how they can improve. As such, missing thiscritical section of a formal report is a very disappointing thing.Indeed, this section is very valuable, as it would provide thereaders with the exact points for improvement based on the results ofthe study.
