Integrationof psychology and Christian faith in counseling

Counselingis among the most important parts of human life. Given the highnumber of stressful situations that people come across, we can onlyimagine how unbearable life could have been to most people had it notbeen for counseling. Indeed, the individuals who have witnessedsituations that can be classified as traumatizing, such as brutalkillings in civil wars, are often able to cope with them after a goodand proper counseling.

However, most of the counsel givers take the Christian faith approach or thepsychological approach. These are two different approaches which aremeant to achieve similar results. While both register success intheir ways, they still fall short of achieving their full potential. In my view, when these two approaches are used separately, the personbeing advised misses out on the benefits of the omitted approach. Therefore, the ideal counseling should combine both the Christianfaith approach and the psychological approach. This was, the personbeing counseled gets the best of both worlds (Andersonet al.,2013).

Counselingis a face-to-face talk that is given by a professional to anotherperson who is experiencing problems, or some difficulties in life, especially psychologically ones. After going through some difficultsituations in life, or having witnessed some traumatizing event, aperson may lose his or her bearing in life, and character. Counselinghelps to restore a person’s character, attitude, confidence, andbehavior (Andersonet al.,2013).

Psychologistsform the bulk of counsel-givers. However, there are theologians whoalso give counseling, given their religious knowledge. In fact, religion and psychology are related in a way. However, few peoplehave found the need to integrate them for counseling purposes. Whilepsychologists use thebiopsychosocial model of behavior and human development to offer tocounsel, the Christian advisors use spiritualism as the foundation oftheir counseling. The biopsychosocial model has fashioned out of thethinking that human beings are products of their biologicalinteraction, psychological setups, and social environment(Andersonet al.,2013).So,human beings, in both mind and body, are results of biologicalinteractions, social setting. These are the basis on whichpsychologists counsel people who are having psychological problems.

However,in the recent past, psychologists have started taking spirituality asone of the pillars of their counseling this is a good move, as itwould take into account the mental, physical, and spiritual part ofan individual when giving counseling. While the psychologists whogive counseling only deal with the physical and mental part of aperson, the Christians giving counseling only deal with the spiritualpart of a person(Anderson et al.,2013). Thus, a union of the two would bring about a wholesomecounseling that is far more beneficial than the two separated.

Conclusion

Thereare various ways through which a person can give counseling to amentally, physically, or spiritually traumatized person. Indeed, there are as many forms of psychological problems as the number ofpeople coming for counseling, so, the method of counseling willentirely depend on an individual situation. However, the three basesof counseling are biological interaction, psychological setups, andsocial environment. While the psychologists use techniques that target a person`s mentaland physical being, the Christian advisors use techniques that targetthe spiritual part of a person. Therefore, if these two approaches tocounseling are used together, they would bring out a wholesome andall-rounded method of counseling.
