IsHomosexuality Natural or Nurtured?

Sexualorientation plays a significant role in the growth of humanpersonality and behavior.

Homosexualityis a result of epigenetic, genetic, and development of sex hormones.Similarly, environmental factors such as cultural, social, personalexperiences and education contribute to sexual orientations. Same sexattraction is a critical topic that varies with history, culture, andtraditions. Homosexuality is a result of an interaction between genesand environmental factors whereby, developmental, environmental, andgenetic factors influence a person’s behavior, feelings, andemotions.

Astudy conducted on factors that enhance same -sex attraction foundthat family and social factors did not play a significant role in theorientation. However, external influences like sexual abuse, lack ofparental love identity disorder, and gender discomfort, contribute tothe prevalence of homosexuality (Whitehead, 2011). Homosexualphenotypes often feel lonely because of their sexual orientation, which is not in accordance with the societal practices. Mosthomosexuals are reserved for fear of stigmatization and rejection bythe society, family, friends, and institutions because of thestereotype. Therefore, genes do not contribute to a personas sexualorientation. The location in which an individual grows influencestheir characters and personality. Personal reactions to environmentalfactors play a significant role in the prevalence of same sexattraction.

ConflictPerspective

Theconflict perspective agrees with my opinion that social behavior iswell manifested through tension between different groups like thehomosexuals and heterosexuals. The queer theory asserts that both menand women are heterosexuals and other sexual orientations areabnormal (Schaefer, 2015).The theory of pathology further assertsthat homosexuality among adults is a condition or a disease ofdeviating from the cultural norms. Development of erotic feelingstowards members of the same sex is a mental disease that needs theattention of a psychiatrist. Homosexuality is an externalmanifestation of internal defects such as excessive mothering, sexualabuse, and hostile parents. However, sexual deviance is an abnormalpractice defined as a disease and unethical. That is why mosthomosexuals are ashamed to state their sexual orientation in thefamily, society, or workplace fro fear of stigmatization anddiscrimination. Although scientific research shows that homosexualityis not a disease, people ignore the scientific knowledge and chooseto believe that they bigotry propagated by the media (Smith, 2015).Same sex attraction may also be a manifestation of the heightenedposition of women in the society and change in gender roles. Thepathological theories believe that homosexuality is a curableailment. However, scientific researches argue that sexual orientationis an internal conviction that cannot be easily changed throughtherapies. Individuals that underwent therapeutical treatment tochange their sexual orientation testified that their integrity washarmed.

EnvironmentalFactors that Contribute to Homosexuality

AlthoughHomosexuality is no longer considered as a disease in the UnitedStates, various factors determined by psychologists contribute to thepractice. Gay men often exhibit high rates of anxiety, stress, andmood disorders than heterosexuals (Smith, 2015). Similarly, whilelesbians’ exhibit no risk for eating disorder, gay men are moreconcerned about their physical look. Homosexual phenotypes oftenexhibit the fear of losing their marriage. Therefore, psychologistsneed to help them find the underlying problem and identify conflictsassociated with sexual identity. Stigmatization of people in same-sex relationship results in higher stress and suicide levels. Therefore, psychologists must work with such individuals and helpthem learn to value their views and overcome social stigmatization.
