In regards doing qualitative data analysis, the first step ofassigning logical units that would later be coded is the mostcritical. What the author highlights is the fact that the process ismulti-iterative and can be tedious and boring. What I believe shouldbe added coding process is making considerations of the researchapproaches to be used to match the coding method applied. Standardqualitative methods, such as ethnomethodology, phenomenology(concerned with experience, meaning and language), grounded theory(interested in developing theory derived from data obtained), andnarrative methods, are aligned with particular epistemological, philosophical, or theoretical approaches (Gale, Heath, Cameron,Rashid & Redwood 2013). Therefore, the authors recommend thatanalysts should use coding methods that apply to a wide range ofapproaches where the qualitative slant used, such as the currentcase, is not clear. One such approach is the framework methodrecommended by Gale and colleagues.
In the process of coding, one must take due precaution. While theauthor notes the suitability of video records as a way of analyzingqualitative data, there are significant challenges. Pierre andJackson (2014) note that examining recorded data does not presentaccurate methods of identifying certain words and phrases as data andothers not. The authors claim that most coders will have underlyingknowledge on the meaning of words that they impose on statements byparticipants. For instance, the concept of interpreting non-verbaldata can be misinterpreted based on the coders` cultural background. To address such challenges, Vaismoradi, Turunen, and Bondas (2013)insist on the need to understand the context of data. This means thatthe coder must immerse himself or herself in the world of theparticipants to understand the context and add the meaning of wordsand phrases. Based on these views, I feel that there is a need forfurther and detailed research for the enhanced understanding of thebest methods to use in coding data so as to match with the underlyingapproach. That way, the credibility of research can be enhanced.
