AnIntensive care unit refers to a multidisciplinary field in medicalhealth care concerned with patients who may be in criticalconditions. The patients may have sustained, or could be at a highrisk of sustaining an organ system failure. This threat results dueto an infection or injury. As a nurse based at a major teachinghospital, my major responsibility in the ICU department isrecognizing and managing critically sick patients. The increasedacquisition of knowledge regarding the care of such patients gives anopportunity to manage those in critical conditions.

Our mission in the ICU department is to provide safe, efficient andhigh-quality treatment and comfort all patients with any seriouscondition, and to support those that care for them. Our vision theother hand is to deliver the best possible patient results throughthe exercise of excellent, compassionate, evidence-based and reliableteam oriented intensive care medicine. In every circumstance, we wishto see the needs and hopes of patients and the expectations of theirloved ones balanced with the possibility of success and suffering.Based on experience, our practice dignified end of life care in casecure becomes futile.

Our values include integrity, collaboration, accountability,innovation, excellence and result-oriented. The organization seeks toapply these values to all aspects of work[ CITATION Byr14 l 1033 ].These values are reflected in the mission and vision statementbecause they coordinate to provide highest standards of patient care.From this view, it is evident that the connection between the values,missionand vision statements in the ICU department provide qualityassurance. These aspects continually enhance our performance byconsistent review of every nature of service. They also contribute insetting the long and short term goals on a yearly basis.

Criticalcare unit is one of the most challenging specialties in the nursingcareer that involves caring for patients involved in thelife-threatening infections. Therefore, it is imperative to prepareand mentor those seeking to work in the critical care nursingdepartment[ CITATION Fos15 l 1033 ].Peer mentoring is one important method to foster an environment thatis supportive of the ICU nurses. A mentor affects the professionallife of any individual by raising insight, identifying the requiredknowledge, and expanding opportunities for growth.

Thissupport boosts the coaching a person already has from someone else.Indeed, the importance of mentorship is to give additionalopportunity to encourage or facilitate someone’s personal orprofessional growth by sharing knowledge gained through experience.Personally speaking, mentorship program has been important in myprofessional career. As an ICU nurse, mentorship has enabled me toacquire role models who have been guiding me in achieving my goals. Indeed, a mentor has shaped my professional advancement. That is tosay, becoming part the mentorship process has been a dominant effortin my career development.

Engagingin in a valuable mentoring relationship, therefore, has increased mylevel of comfort with my knowledge in academic nursing. Thisexperience offered me various benefits within the hospital. Firstly,it built a strong and supportive nursing culture. It also created adeveloping faculty awareness of positive growth opportunities. Further, mentorship increased interaction and networking from onedepartment to another within the hospital. However, those seeking toadvance in my discipline, I would inspire them by encouraging themalways to stay optimistic regardless of any negativity. In thismanner, I will help them to recover from their impediments.
